Canada announces $100 million scholarships for Indian students, introduces 'hybrid study locations'

Canada has announced a new scholarship program worth up to $100 million to support Indian students. The funding is part of a new education and talent partnership between Canada and India. The announcement was made last week during official talks between the two countries. The scholarship program is included under a plan called the Canada–India Talent and Innovation Strategy, which focuses on strengthening cooperation in education and research.According to an official government statement, the plan includes several steps to increase cooperation in education and research between Canadian and Indian institutions.

The main part of the plan is a $100 million scholarship fund. This fund will provide up to 200 fully funded scholarships for Indian students to study at universities in Canada. The scholarship funding will be offered through the University of Toronto. It will support selected Indian students who are admitted to programs at Canadian institutions.Details such as who can apply, when to apply, and the exact rules of the scholarships have not yet been announced. However, official statements say the scholarships are expected to help cover tuition and other related academic costs. The scholarship program is one part of the Canada–India Talent and Innovation Strategy. The plan also includes 13 new partnerships between Canadian and Indian universities. These partnerships aim to increase student exchanges, support joint research projects, and make it easier for students to study in both countries.Besides the scholarships, the plan also includes setting up three “hybrid study locations” in India. These will be joint academic centres created by Canadian universities working with Indian institutions. The centres will focus on research and education in key areas such as technology and artificial intelligence. They will also allow students to start Canadian university courses in India and later complete their studies in Canada.Canada’s government stated that the new strategy also includes expanded research collaboration, student and faculty exchanges, and a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in creative industries such as visual arts, music, publishing and entertainment technologies.India is one of the largest source countries for international students in Canada. This new plan is seen as helping Canada remain a top destination for international students and skilled talent.
