US President Donald Trump on Monday confirmed that he has discussed plans to limit nuclear weapons during his recent conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump also stated his intent to bring China into the fold of denuclearisation efforts, citing rising concerns over Beijing’s growing arsenal.

“We are talking about limiting nuclear weapons. We will get China into that,” Trump told reporters during a press briefing in the Oval Office. “We have the most. Russia has the second most, and China has third.” While acknowledging China’s current position behind the US and Russia in nuclear capabilities, Trump warned of its rapid growth. “China is way behind, but they will catch us in five years,” he added.

Trump made the remarks during South Korean President Lee Jae-myung’s visit to the White House. The visit marked a strengthening of US–South Korea ties amid increasing global focus on nuclear security and regional stability.

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), as of January 2025, the US and Russia together possess approximately 90% of the world’s nuclear warheads. China, meanwhile, is estimated to have at least 600 warheads, with its stockpile steadily increasing.

“I think the denuclearisation is a very … big game, but Russia’s willing to do it, and I think China’s going to be willing to do it,” Trump said, emphasising the importance of international cooperation to curb the proliferation of nuclear arms.

Trump also referenced Vladimir Putin’s visit to Alaska on August 15, describing it as a sign of willingness to negotiate. However, he expressed continued frustration over Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine. “Every conversation I have with him is a good conversation. And then, unfortunately, a bomb is loaded up into Kiev … and then I would get very angry,” Trump said.

He noted that efforts to manage the nuclear issue are part of broader negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine. Trump reiterated the US’s support for Ukrainian sovereignty and added that discussions around security guarantees for Ukraine are ongoing.
