Mammootty, Nayanthara, Dileep: Meet the Malayalam superstars who changed their birth names

Malayalam cinema’s biggest stars often adopt screen names, a practice that has shaped their public personas. From Mammootty’s accidental rebranding to Urvashi’s name inspired by an award, and Nayanthara’s ‘star’ moniker, these changes have significantly impacted their careers. Dileep and Meera Jasmine also chose unique names for market appeal, proving a name is indeed stardust in entertainment.

Wondering what’s in a name? Everything! Especially in the entertainment industry, a name can either make or break a star’s value. For actors, a name has the power to shape their persona in the public memory. In Malayalam cinema, many stars have rebranded themselves with catchy screen names, either suggested by directors, numerologists, or for better market appeal. And some, we bet, would leave you surprised! Take a look.

Mammootty

Malayalam cinema’s biggest star, Mammootty, was born Muhammad Kutty Panaparambil Ismail. During his younger years, he was a tad hesitant to carry his real name, ‘Muhammad Kutty’, so he would introduce himself as ‘Omar Sharif.’ People would call him Omar until his ID card fell out of his pocket. “Someone picked up the ID card, looked at it, and asked, ‘Your name isn’t Omar… isn’t it Mammootty?’ From that day on, among my friends, and now among all of you,I became Mammootty,” the superstar recently revealed during a public event.

Urvashi

urvashi

Veteran actress Urvashi’s real name is Kavitha Ranjini. That’s right. She changed the name after directors requested it. Though many believe it was ‘Munthanai Mudichu’ director K. Bhagyaraj who changed her name, that isn’t the truth. “Before acting in that film, I had done another movie with Karthik. After the film was fully shot, the producer watched it and said that this girl has the potential to become a very talented actress in the future, so she should be given a very peculiar name. After discussion, they came up with the name Urvashi, after the prestigious honor, the Urvashi Award. Perhaps tomorrow, if she were to win the Urvashi Award, people would say, ‘Urvashi has won the Urvashi Award’. That’s how I got the name,” Urvashi revealed in an old interview.

Dileep

Dileep’s real name is Gopalakrishnan Padmanabhan Pillai. He began his career as a mimicry artist, and the long name often hindered stage appeal, so he decided to shorten it and chose Dileep. The name sounded unique and was something no one in the Malayalam film industry had.

Nayanthara

nayanthara

It’s no secret that Nayanthara isn’t the superstar’s real name. She was born Diana Mariam Kurian. During her debut in the 2003 Malayalam movie ‘Manassinakkare’, the team, including director Sathyan Anthikad, discussed a screen name for her. It was legendary actress Sheela who suggested the name Nayanthara. “She was a beautiful girl and also had talent in acting. Sathyan Anthikad expressed that they were thinking about changing her name, so they asked our opinion by suggesting a few names to actor Jayaram and me. Finally, we selected the name Nayanthara. Nayanthara means ‘Star.’ The name is suitable for any entertainment industry. We hoped that this name could even work in Bollywood,” Sheela earlier revealed. And their predictions were absolutely spot on! She did make it to Bollywood and also became one of the biggest female stars in the movie industry.

Meera Jasmine

meera jasmine

Just like her acting chops, her name is unique. You won’t bump into someone named Meera Jasmine every other day. She debuted in movies with A. K. Lohithadas’ directorial ‘Soothradharan’. Her real name is Jasmine Mary Joseph. She tweaked her name to Meera Jasmine, which undoubtedly suits her lovely personality. She does have a girl-next-door appeal, and the name perfectly encapsulates it.A name is everything, and for actors, it isn’t just identity; it’s stardust. Go to Source
