Maxi Shield, the fan-favorite veteran of RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under Season 1, has passed away at the age of 51. Known as the “Good Girl of Drag,” Shield’s career spanned over two decades, leaving an indelible mark on the Australian queer community long before she graced the global stage.

Famed drag race performer Maxi Shield, who was best known for starring as one of the popular contestants on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under’ season 1, has passed away.

Maxi Shield passes away after suspected complications from throat cancer

According to Vanity, one of her close friends and a fellow ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under’ contestant confirmed the news. She shared an emotional post on her social media page, stating that the famous drag queen had passed away suddenly. The post featured a photo of the two, all dressed up and posing against a white background. The caption read, “We are all mourning the loss of an incredible icon, friend, and our beloved sister. Thank you for the laughs, the cackles, and the magic you brought into our lives.” As soon as the news was shared online, tributes and heartfelt messages began pouring in.

Maxi Shield’s cause of death

No official cause of her passing has been confirmed to the public as of yet. However, in an earlier social media post, the drag queen had shared a major health update with the world. She had revealed that after going to the doctor and getting some tests done, she was diagnosed with throat cancer. She shared that she had noticed a swollen gland in her throat, which had prompted her to reach out to specialists. In the video, she added more clarity by sharing, “Saw a sea of specialists today, the growth in my neck is cancerous but has a 70/80% treatment rate. I will be admitted into St Vincent’s this afternoon for 48 hrs of steroids to make sure airways aren’t swollen and prepare for chemotherapy next week. Tributes come in for Maxi Shield

Several people posted about Maxi Shield after she passed away, including ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ judge. Posting to her socials, Michelle Visage also paid her respects to the artist, citing that “I loved this queen. A glorious human on the inside and out. Your love, heart, talent, and energy will be missed…. @maxishield rest in power, my angel, you were truly one of a kind.”Meanwhile, one person commented, “I am beyond devastated and will cherish all the joy and laughter we shared! Sending a lot of love,” while another person shared, “Omg, no. I just saw her at Fair Day. This doesn’t seem real at all. I’m so so sorry for what you must be going through right now.
