Rajpal Yadav has paid half amount of Rs 5 crore debt, says his lawyer: 'Negotiations are underway'

Actor Rajpal Yadav’s is currently in Tihar jail in a cheque bounce cases as the court said that he failed to honor his commitment in returning the about of the debt. A hearing took place today, Thursday, February 12 and it was regarding a bail plea filed by Yadav. Now his laywer Bhaskar Upadhyay, has stated that 50 per cent of the outstanding amount in the actor’s financial insolvency case has already been cleared. He explained that an adjournment was sought during Thursday’s hearing because the bail application filed by them requires a response from the opposing party.Upadhyay also mentioned that he plans to meet Rajpal Yadav in jail to seek his instructions regarding the pending payment and to understand his position on the matter. According to him, clearer answers are expected to emerge during the next hearing on Monday. He said, “The money that was invested from the investment purpose has not been denied to. Earlier also when there was talk of money, the company had refused to take money. Negotiations are underway on the 2012 agreement, in which three months have already been served. I can’t say anything about who gave money to Rajpal Yadav, it is a family matter. I will personally go to the jail and tell him how it needs to be done. Out of the five crores so far, two and a half crores have been given, see what the court decides on Monday”.For those unfamiliar with the case, Rajpal Yadav surrendered after the Delhi High Court directed him to do so in connection with multiple cheque bounce matters. The actor had taken a loan in 2010 to produce his film Ata Pata Laapata but failed to repay it. In 2018, a magistrate’s court sentenced both Rajpal and his wife to six months in jail. The verdict was upheld by a sessions court in 2019. Later, in 2024, when the couple approached the Delhi High Court seeking relief, the sentence was temporarily suspended on the grounds that they were not habitual offenders, giving them time to settle the dues. However, the repayment did not materialise. Subsequently, a single-judge Bench of Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma criticised the actor’s conduct, noting that he had repeatedly failed to honour settlement commitments despite being granted multiple opportunities.
