Mahadangal: MP Govt Launches Campaign to Drop ‘Makhan Chor’ Tag from Lord Krishna’s Name | ABP NEWS

In a special segment of ABP News’ Mahadangal, the show highlighted a controversial move by the Madhya Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. The state’s Culture Department is set to launch a campaign to discourage referring to Lord Krishna as “Makhan Chor” (butter thief), calling the term inappropriate and a distortion of history. Yadav argues that associating the word “chor” (thief) with Lord Krishna was a result of Mughal propaganda. The campaign intends to appeal to spiritual leaders and storytellers to stop using the phrase. However, the initiative has ignited criticism. Opposition parties, especially the Congress, allege that the government is attempting to rewrite history and distract from real developmental issues. Madhya Pradesh currently ranks 15th among large states in national development indices. Several religious scholars and Krishna devotees have also opposed the move, asserting that “Makhan Chor” is a beloved and symbolic part of Krishna’s childhood leelas (divine plays), deeply rooted in scriptures like the Vishnu Purana and Harivansh Purana. Critics argue that this term reflects divine love, not literal theft. This Mahadangal episode raises vital questions: Should governments interfere in matters of faith and age-old traditions?
