'Deeply disappointing': Cops charged in Canada for working with extortion gang, drug traffickers; they leaked personal information to criminals

York Police in Canada announced a major operation against the ongoing organized crime in Toronto and said seven current cops and one former cop have been charged with criminal conspiracy, which sought to murder an Ontario corrections officer. These police officers collected personal and private information and distributed it to the gang leaders.

List of the cops involved in organized crime

  • Timothy Barnhardt – Toronto Police Service constable
  • Robert Black – Toronto Police Service sergeant
  • John Madeley (Sr) – Toronto Police Service constable (retired)
  • John Madeley (Jr) – Toronto Police Service constable
  • Carl Grellette – Toronto Police Service sergeant
  • Saurabjit Bedi – Toronto Police Service constable
  • Derek McCormick – Toronto Police Service constable
  • Elias Mouawad – Toronto Police Service constable

Project South: Here’s what happened

Deputy chief Ryan Hogan of the York Regional Police narrated the operation at a press conference today. Brian Da Costa, a suspected drug trafficker, was arrested in January 23 this year. Officers seized 169 pounds of cannabis and one pound of fentanyl, which we believe was destined outbound for a European location. Cops got to know that insiders were involved with Da Costa’s operation. Others were assisting the racket by leaking confidential information. Several other civilian suspects were also identified by police on Thursday. Their charges include conspiracy to commit murder, possession of a prohibited firearm, with ammunition, and disguise with intent. The investigation began in June 2025 when a conspiracy unfolded to murder a member of corrections management who was working at an Ontario Correctional Institute institution. On that particular day, a number of suspects went to the target’s home in York Region to murder him. The 2025 incident was the tip of the iceberg that led the investigators to a complex network of crime, including conspiracy to commit murder, shooting, extortion, robbery, drug trafficking and firearms offences.York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween said after these cops leaked personal information, crimes took place in real time. It’s a deeply disturbing day for policing as organized crime found its way inside the police agency, he said. “This news is both shocking and completely unacceptable. Corruption has no place in policing. It’s never and will never be tolerated,” the police chief said.
