Breaking News: India-US Trade Deal Boosts Exports, Protects Agriculture & Strengthens Strategic Partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the U.S. in February 2025, India and the United States have been engaged in continuous discussions to finalize a balanced and mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement. Over the past year, negotiators from both sides held multiple rounds of detailed discussions, ensuring protection of sensitive sectors, particularly India’s agriculture and dairy industries, while addressing key U.S. interests. On 2 February 2026, PM Modi and former U.S. President Donald Trump spoke by phone on several bilateral and international issues. Subsequently, the U.S. announced a reduction in tariffs on Indian exports to 18%, significantly lower than tariffs imposed on other competitors. This move is expected to enhance India’s export competitiveness, especially in labor-intensive sectors and manufacturing. The agreement also opens opportunities for MSMEs, skilled workers, and advanced technology access, supporting India’s “Made in India for the World” and “Innovative India” vision. Energy security remains a priority, and India’s diversification strategy ensures resilience in changing global markets. Officials stated that both countries will now complete technical and procedural requirements to fully operationalize the agreement. Analysts say this structural trade pact will strengthen India-US ties, increase exports, and accelerate India’s journey toward a developed and self-reliant India by 2047.
