Pakistan-born Anosh Ahmed, hospital executive who fled US after $290 million fraud, arrested in Serbia

Pakistan-born Anosh Ahmed, a former executive at Loretto Hospital in Chicago, has been arrested in Serbia after fleeing the United States following charges of defrauding the federal government of $290 million. US prosecutors have confirmed that they intend to seek his extradition.Ahmed was taken into custody on November 30, 2025, following the issuance of a global alert, known as a Red Notice, which is an international request by Interpol to locate and arrest a person.Assistant US Attorneys Sheri Mecklenburg and Kelly Guzman confirmed that Ahmed is in custody in Serbia: “As of now, the United States understands that Ahmed remains in custody in Serbia, pending extradition.”A Serbian court denied Ahmed’s request to be released to a hotel in Belgrade on December 30 and ordered him to remain in custody.Ahmed resigned in March 2021 after controversies during the Covid-19 pandemic involving improper vaccination incidents. Loretto Hospital gave shots to people who were not yet eligible, including workers at Trump Tower and members of an Oak Forest church. According to reporting by Block Club Chicago, Ahmed came to US as a child from Pakistan. Court documents allege that he obtained personal information of around 150,000 patients at Loretto Hospital and used it to submit fraudulent claims to the federal government.Ahmed and two others, Heather Bergdahl and Sameer Suhail, were charged in 2024 with embezzling over $15 million from the hospital by submitting fake invoices and false payment requests.Last year, Ahmed and three others were accused of filing nearly $900 million in fake claims for Covid-19 testing materials, with about $293 million paid out. The other people charged are Mohamed Sirajudeen, Mahmood Sami Khan, and Suhaib Ahmad Chaudhry. Prosecutors say Sirajudeen is expected to plead guilty before theA hearing for the case is set for February 13, 2026. Prosecutors said that if Ahmed is not extradited, they will adjust the evidence for the defendants who are on trial.
