Breaking News: Shashi Tharoor Demands Govt Clarification on India‑US Trade Deal; Statement Soon in Parliament

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor raised pointed questions in Parliament over the recently announced India‑US trade deal, seeking clarity on the terms and its impact on Indian farmers. Tharoor emphasized that while the U.S. has reduced tariffs from 50 % to 18 %, the government has not publicly detailed the implications for India’s agriculture and dairy sectors. He asked whether the Indian market is now open to American farmers and urged the government to provide a transparent statement to Parliament, reflecting its commitments and safeguards for domestic producers. The opposition claims that lack of information has caused confusion among lawmakers, arguing that India’s agricultural interests must be clearly protected. Tharoor stressed that as representatives of the people, MPs must be informed of the trade deal’s provisions to ensure public accountability. Responding to the criticism, Leader of the House JP Nadda described the opposition’s behavior as “irresponsible” and anti-national, stating that the government is ready for full discussion and will issue a formal statement today. The ruling side asserted that Parliament will receive complete clarity on all aspects of the deal, including tariff reductions, trade balances, and sectoral impacts, ensuring that India’s national and economic interests remain safeguarded.
