Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino removed amid backlash over Pretti shooting; Kristi Noem also said to be at risk: Report

Gregory Bovino was removed from his role as the “commander at large” for the US Border Patrol and was set to return to his former job in California, where he was expected to retire soon, the Atlantic reported on Monday, citing a Homeland Security official and two people with knowledge of the change. Earlier on Monday, President Donald Trump and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz each struck a conciliatory tone after a private phone call about immigration enforcement, a sign the two sides were seeking a way to end their standoff over a deportation drive that claimed the lives of two US citizens in Minneapolis.Bovino’s sudden demotion was the clearest sign yet that the Trump administration reconsidered its most aggressive tactics after the killing Saturday of 37-year-old Alex Pretti by Border Patrol agents under Bovino’s command. Earlier, President Trump appeared to signal in a series of social-media posts a tactical shift in the administration’s mass-deportation campaign. Trump wrote that he spoke with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, whom the White House blamed for inciting violence, and the two men were now on “a similar wavelength.” Tom Homan, the former ICE chief whom Trump designated “border czar,” will head to Minnesota to assume command of the federal mobilisation there, Trump said. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and her close adviser Corey Lewandowski, who were Bovino’s biggest backers at DHS, were also at risk of losing their jobs, as per the Atlantic.
