Neha Dhupia reveals parents planned to name her Nirvana

Neha Dhupia reveals parents planned to name her Nirvana, but a film changed their decision

Neha Dhupia’s parents chose Nirvana for its deep meaning, but a lunchtime movie at the registration office introduced a Neha character, sealing her name. She recalls her father’s symbolic pageant ticket to Mumbai—“Try not to use the return”—and her awestruck first train trip exploring Bombay’s studios.

Neha Dhupia remains a well-known figure in Indian cinema and pop culture. Without her film career, she might have carried a completely different name and possibly an entirely different life path. In a recent interview, the actress warmly shared how her parents initially intended to name her Nirvana, a decision driven by its profound meaning, until destiny and a film role stepped in.

Neha Dhupia tells her naming story

At The Bombay Film Story event, Neha revealed, “My name that my parents had decided for me was Nirvana.” She shared the story she’s heard countless times while growing up. As the tale unfolds, her parents arrived at the registration office during lunchtime. Rather than wait, they went out to catch a movie. A character in the film was named Neha, and that sealed it. “They were just like, Nirvana, Neha. But it would have worked,” she added with a grin, noting how seamlessly the change took place.

Neha Dhupia pageant beginnings

Reflecting on her early beauty pageant journey, Neha recounted the moment her father gave her a symbolic ticket—literally. After qualifying from Delhi, one of the pageant’s toughest circuits, she received an Air India ticket to Mumbai. It wasn’t just any ticket; it included a return option she could use later. “He gave me that ticket and said, ‘Try not to use the return ticket,’” she recalled. “I’m that old-school girl,” she shared, revealing how she cherishes memories with the same planned sentiment she brings to life.

Neha Dhupia first Mumbai visit

Neha’s first trip to Mumbai remains etched in her memory. She traveled by train with her father, eyes wide with wonder and curiosity. “I said, ‘Papa, I want to see Bombay,’” she recalled. Just into her twenties, she wandered the city, stayed in Navinagar, connected with friends, and peeked into editing studios. Seeing film promos being crafted—perhaps for a Salman Khan movie—left her awestruck. “I was like, wow, this is how it’s done. This is how it’s made.” Go to Source
