The ongoing standoff between Jyotirmath Peeth Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand and the Prayagraj Mela administration has escalated into a major religious and political flashpoint. While the saint community appears divided over the Shankaracharya’s protest, there is widespread outrage over the alleged mistreatment of his disciples, including claims of physical abuse, hair-pulling, and being dragged by police personnel. Even after five days, no visible disciplinary action has been taken against any official, intensifying anger among saints and devotees. The controversy has now widened with sharp exchanges between religious leaders. Kalki Peethadheeshwar Acharya Pramod Krishnam questioned the language used by the Shankaracharya against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, calling for restraint and dialogue. In contrast, Mahamandaleshwar Computer Baba accused the administration of targeting saints and questioned the silence of the government over alleged police excesses. The issue has also taken a strong political turn. Opposition parties, including the Samajwadi Party and Congress, have openly backed the Shankaracharya, accusing the Yogi government of insulting Sanatan Dharma. Posters supporting the Shankaracharya have surfaced in Lucknow, while the RSS has defended the government, suggesting habitual opposition to administrative systems by certain individuals. With emotions running high, the dispute now stands at the intersection of faith, power, and politics.
