From Red MAGA cap to mocking videos: Here's how Greenland responds to Donald Trump's threat

Thousands of demonstrators gathered across Denmark and Greenland on Saturday to protest President Donald Trump’s demand to seize the Arctic island, as he announced new tariffs on several European countries until a deal is reached for his administration to control Greenland.Protesters tried from a red MAGA cap to making a funny video to protests to stand against Trump’s tariff threat. Red MAGA capIn Copenhagen, an estimated 10,000 Danes assembled at City Hall Square to push back against Trump’s threats. Many wore parody hats mimicking Trump’s bright-red MAGA cap, but reading “Make America Go Away.”The caps also read “Nu det NUUK,” a play on Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, meaning “Now it’s enough.” On the side of the cap was the Greenland flag and the country’s own spin on the MAGA slogan. The caps reportedly sold out in Denmark.“We have to support Greenland. We are Danes, Greenland are Danes, even though they’re Greenlanders, and we just have to stick together,” protester Susanne Kristensen told NBC News. Greenland is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark. Some demonstrators expressed fears about speaking out against Trump, worrying they may be barred from visiting the United States. Others said they had no interest in visiting until Trump leaves office.Mocking videoA video went viral on social media showing locals collapsing into snowdrifts, reflecting frustrations over US overtures to buy Greenland, renewed with Trump’s inauguration and a flag-over-map post. The video highlighted America’s opioid tragedy, citing over 70,000 deaths last year, though down 21% in 2025, and drew reactions ranging from laughter abroad to defensiveness at home. https://x.com/MarioNawfal/status/2013657777713877376Greenlanders pushed back against expansionism through protests and merchandise, underscoring their autonomous stance and their own struggles with alcohol and isolation. The video was reportedly posted by Inunnguaq Christian Poulsen.Protesters use national flag, chant “Greenland is not for sale”In Greenland, thousands of Greenlanders carefully marched across snow and ice on Saturday, holding protest signs, waving their national flag and chanting “Greenland is not for sale” amid what was described as increasing threats of an American takeover. As they finished their trek from the small downtown of Nuuk to the US consulate, news broke that Trump announced he would charge a 10% tariff on eight European countries from February over their opposition to US control of Greenland.“I thought this day couldn’t get any worse, but it just did,” Malik Dollerup-Scheibel said after the Associated Press told him about Trump’s announcement. “It just shows he has no remorse for any kind of human being now.”
