Atishi video row: AAP MLA denies remarks against Sikh gurus; seeks unedited assembly video footage

AAP MLA Atishi

NEW DELHI: Leader of opposition in the Delhi Assembly Atishi on Monday denied allegations that she made derogatory remarks against Sikh Gurus, after BJP legislators raised the issue during the recent Winter Session over her alleged use of “insensitive words” against Guru Tegh Bahadur, and sought an unedited video recording of the Assembly proceedings related to the matter. In her submission to the committee, Atishi, an Aam Aadmi Party MLA, rejected the allegations. “At the outset, I state with utmost clarity and sincerity that I have never made any derogatory remark against Sikh Gurus, either in the House on 6th January 2026, or at any other point of time in my life. I categorically deny the allegation in its entirety,” she said in her letter. She also questioned the contents of the notice issued to her, saying it relied on “vague terms like ‘pandemonium in the house’ and ‘disturbed the proceedings’” without clearly stating what was allegedly said or the context in which it was spoken.“In the absence of such particulars, I am placed in the untenable position of being asked to respond to an undefined and unsubstantiated allegation. This is contrary to basic principles of natural justice,” she said. She requested a copy of the complaint filed against her and asked for the “unedited video recording of the official proceedings of the said date, in original form, along with a certificate under the evidence law.” Atishi also sought copies of communications from the Speaker asking her to attend the sitting and clarify her position on the allegations. Her statement came after Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta said earlier this month that the Committee on Privileges had initiated proceedings against Atishi and asked her to submit a written reply by January 19.
