Breaking News: Ahilyabai Holkar Statue Row, Congress Questions Varanasi Redevelopment

A political and public controversy has erupted in Varanasi after allegations emerged that a structure housing the statue of Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar was affected during ongoing reconstruction at Manikarnika Ghat. Congress leaders raised strong objections, demanding answers and questioning whether the redevelopment work is compromising the city’s cultural heritage. Citizens and local groups also staged a protest march, drawing attention to the growing unease. Ahilyabai Holkar, remembered as a key benefactor of Kashi, had restored several sacred sites, including the iconic Kashi Vishwanath Temple, in the 18th century. Her contributions remain central to the city’s spiritual and cultural identity, making any alleged damage to her representations a sensitive issue. Responding to the controversy, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath defended the redevelopment project, stating that no statues were destroyed and that viral visuals circulating online were AI-generated, intended to malign Banaras’ image. He emphasized that the reconstruction is part of an effort to improve infrastructure at the historic ghat while preserving its heritage. The incident highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing urban development with cultural preservation in the holy city.
