37-year-old Sukbinder Sogy, an Indian-origin man in Surrey, has been charged for allegedly trying to set a sleeping passenger on fire inside a train last month. Police found an extensive history of Sogy’s violent behavior in the past that included arson and weapon possession. The train incident took place on December 16 when a man was asleep on board of a SkyTrain traveling from Vancouver to Burnaby. Sogy allegedly poured liquid on the victim’s clothing and attempted to ignite it. But other passengers on the train intervened and removed Sogy from the train. Sogy has been charged with assault with a weapon, mischief causing danger to life, and possession of incendiary material, police said.“This was a terrifying ordeal and thankfully, the victim did not suffer any serious physical injuries,” spokesperson of Metro Vancouver Transit Police constable Amanda Steed said. “Transit Police would never ask that anyone place themselves in harm’s way, but we need to acknowledge the bravery and selflessness of the bystanders who rushed to assist the victim and held the suspect until police arrived,” the spokesperson said. Police said court records paint a disturbing picture of Sogy getting involved in conflicts with the law frequently and in most cases involving fire and weapons. Sogy’s pending legal matters include arson and life-dangering mischied, repeat breaches.
