US President Donald Trump on Thursday (local time) announced the formation of a Gaza board of peace, calling it a key step in the second phase of a US-backed plan aimed at ending the war in the Palestinian territory. In a post on Truth Social, Trump described the board as the “greatest and most prestigious board ever assembled”, without giving further details, adding that the names of board members would be revealed shortly. He wrote: “It is my great honour to announce that the bard of peace has been formed. The members of the board will be announced shortly, but I can say with certainty that it is the greatest and most prestigious board ever assembled at any time, any place. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
.
The announcement comes soon after the formation of a 15-member Palestinian technocratic committee. This committee has been tasked with handling the day-to-day administration of Gaza once the war ends. According to the plan, the committee will function under the supervision of the board of peace, which Trump is expected to chair.
The broader proposal also includes the deployment of an international stabilisation force for maintaining security in Gaza and training selected Palestinian police units. The US-backed Gaza peace plan first took effect on October 10. It led to the return of all hostages held by Hamas and brought an end to active fighting in the besieged territory. Israeli forces, however, have killed 451 people since the ceasefire came into effect, according to the Gaza health ministry, raising questions about the stability of the ceasefire.
