Just minutes before voting began for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections in Maharashtra, the Congress party has leveled serious allegations against the BJP. Congress claimed that BJP workers were distributing kitchen mixers in the Dahisar area of Mumbai, an act seen as potential inducement for voters. The party also accused the Mumbai police of inaction and of detaining Congress workers who tried to file complaints regarding the incident. As per Congress, when complaints were lodged, the police instead took their own party workers into custody, sparking tensions in several areas including Bandra and Dadar. With voting set to conclude by 5:30 PM, the controversy highlights the heated atmosphere surrounding the BMC elections. Analysts suggest that while development issues such as water supply, electricity meters, and civic amenities typically influence voter decisions, identity-based and political strategies may also play a decisive role. The incident underscores the sensitive and high-stakes nature of Mumbai’s local body elections, with authorities being urged to ensure free and fair polling amid rising allegations.
