Indian-origin Uber driver Manvir Singh charged with sexually assaulting 20-year-old passenger in Lethbridge; fled Canada after offence

A 27-year-old Indian-Canadian Uber driver, Manvir Singh, has been charged with sexually assaulting a 20-year-old woman during a ride in Lethbridge, Alberta, on November 9 last year. Police say the victim booked an UberX ride home after visiting Chinook Regional Hospital. She was picked up at a southside business and, following a brief stop at a downtown location, was allegedly taken to a secluded spot in the Lethbridge River Valley where the assault occurred. She was later dropped off at home.Investigators noted that the journey to the river valley and the woman’s home had not been recorded in the Uber app. Officers attended Singh’s home and discovered that he had left Canada. His vehicle was seized and a warrant was issued for his arrest.Singh returned to Canada on December 27, 2025, and was detained by the Canada Border Services Agency at Vancouver International Airport. He was transported to Lethbridge and appeared in court on January 5, 2026.He has been released on bail with several conditions. These include no contact with the victim, a prohibition on leaving Alberta, and surrendering his passport. Singh is scheduled to appear in court again on January 9.In another case, a former Uber driver in Edmonton, Alberta, was also charged with sexually assaulting a female passenger. Police say the incident happened on 30 June 2024, when a woman booked a ride downtown and was picked up by a dark 2023 Nissan Rogue. During the journey, the driver stopped the vehicle and allegedly sexually assaulted the woman. After a lengthy investigation, 32‑year‑old Gurvinder Pannu was arrested in August of the same year and was charged with sexual assault. He was released with conditions that include not working for any ride‑share or taxi service and no contact with the complainant.
