Carmakers eye strong FY26 finish to achieve record sales target

India’s passenger vehicle industry is headed for a highstakes finish to FY26, with carmakers needing a strong performance in the final quarter to offset slowing retail momentum and meet the 8% growth forecast to clock a record 4.73 million unit sales.

Carmakers are pressing ahead, betting on rural demand, GST-led affordability gains and alternative credit channels to overcome a slowdown in December after strong double-digit growth in October and November, even as household net financial savings have slipped to around 5% of GDP.

“The final quarter alone is expected to contribute meaningfully to the targeted 8% growth, although December estimates show retail growth running at just about 3%,” said Ravi Bhatia, president, Jato Dynamics, an automotive data firm.

Price Hikes in Play

The concern is that the thrust in sales post the GST 2.0 reform in September 2025 may be tapering off, with weak household savings and conservative bank lending, despite policy rate cuts, beginning to weigh on discretionary demand.

At the same time, the industry is encouraged by strong demand from rural and semi-urban markets and the fact that the January-March quarter traditionally accounts for a disproportionate share of annual sales. “With the high stakes in the last quarter, the industry faces a critical test of whether GST-driven gains can be sustained or are beginning to plateau,” said a senior official of a carmaker. Also, carmakers such as Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai have announced price hikes ranging from 0.6% to 2.0% effective January. “We have consciously kept inventories lean at 30–35 days,” a Mumbai-based car dealer said, noting that the industry is bracing for a rapid inventory flush rather than a festive-led spike.

Three-Way Battle

This quarter may also see a tough three-way battle for the second spot behind market leader Maruti Suzuki. Hyundai Motor has remained the second-largest PV maker, supported by dispatches of over 373,000 units in the first half of FY26, but Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors have finished ahead of it in the domestic market in calendar 2025, riding on SUV sales and increasing adoption of electric vehicles. This triangular contest is marked by finance schemes and targeted promotions in the fourth quarter, tilting the bargaining power firmly towards buyers.

At the same time, the demand mix is undergoing a quiet but meaningful shift. Urban markets are showing early signs of saturation and aspiration fatigue, particularly in higher-priced segments. In contrast, rural and semi-urban India has emerged as the growth engine.

A stable monsoon and healthy crop output have lifted rural sentiment, triggering replacement demand for compact cars and entry-level SUVs. Post-GST price corrections are even reviving interest in the mini-car segment, long viewed as structurally challenged. “The overall market is expanding rather than shifting in a zero-sum manner,” said Shailesh Chandra, president of Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam).
