Oman: Health Ministry clarifies step by step process for pre-marital medical examination

As Oman makes pre-marital medical testing mandatory, the Ministry of Health has outlined the full examination process, urging couples to view it as a crucial step toward making informed decisions and ensuring their long-term health and marital well-being.

Where the process begins

The pre-marital medical examination starts with both individuals visiting an approved public or private healthcare institution within the Sultanate. At the facility, a physician conducts an initial assessment that focuses on understanding each person’s medical background. This includes:

  • A review of personal medical history
  • Attention to chronic illnesses and hereditary conditions
  • A general health checkup, such as measuring blood pressure

These first steps help establish a clear health baseline for both individuals before moving forward.

Tests, screenings, and medical guidance

Following the initial review, the examination proceeds with a range of medical tests and evaluations. These are designed to identify potential health risks that could affect either partner or future family planning. The examination includes:

  • Blood tests
  • Screenings for sexually transmitted infections
  • Other necessary medical evaluations as determined by the physician

Once results are available, the physician provides health counseling, explains the findings in detail, and discusses available options. Individuals are encouraged to ask questions and seek clarity. Where relevant, genetic guidance and psychological counseling may also be offered to support informed decision-making. Treatment, certification, and legal steps

If any medical condition requires treatment, care is either provided directly or the individual is referred to a specialist. After all examinations, tests, and counseling sessions are completed, the healthcare institution issues an official pre-marital medical certificate for both parties.Key points about the certificate include:

  • A digital copy is sent directly to the relevant notary office
  • This allows the marriage contract process to proceed, pending mutual consent
  • The certificate is valid for three months from the date of the examination

A Preventive step toward a healthier marriage

The Ministry of Health stressed that the pre-marital medical examination should not be seen as a formality. It is a proactive measure aimed at promoting health awareness, preventing future complications, and supporting a healthier and more stable life for both partners as they prepare for marriage.
