'Everyone is Indian': Viral video of 'Amazon Christmas party' in Canada triggers row

A purported video of a Christmas party at an Amazon warehouse in Canada went viral as the person who made the video claimed that everyone in the video was Indian. The person said the video was not meant to attack Indians but to raise the crucial question as to why Canadians were not getting these jobs. The authenticity of the video has not been independently verified. “This video is from a massive Amazon warehouse in Canada. People notice that almost everyone — workers, technicians, and even managers — appears to be from the same background. Let me be very clear. This is not a criticism of workers. Everyone deserves a job. But Canadians are asking how does a huge workplace with thousands of jobs end up looking so one-group-dominant?” the man said in the voiceover of the video. The video showed people eating food at a huge cafeteria-like area, and one person was dressed as Santa. “Many Canadians say they are applying non-stop: online applications, re-applying to different locations and they still don’t get calls back. So the real question isn’t about race; it’s about the hiring system. Is it referral chains? Is it managers hiring from their own networks? So why is the conversation always about low-paying Tim Hortons and not about why high-paying corporations like these are not hiring Canadians at all?” the man said. The video comes at a time when Indians are being targeted by US influencers on social media. The targeting of Indians has several layers — where the IT people accused of stealing American jobs, Indian-origin politicians like Vivek Ramaswamy and even the Second Lady of the US, Usha Vance, are publicly called names because of their Indian origin. The purported Amazon video went viral, with people commenting that this was the situation everywhere. Some people also commented that only Indians work during Christmas, while some pointed out that no Canadians apply for those warehouse jobs.
