Authorities in Mexico discovered six severed heads along a road linking the central states of Puebla and Tlaxcala, in an area where such extreme violence is rare, prosecutors said. The gruesome discovery was first reported by passing drivers. All of the victims were men, according to Tlaxcala’s prosecutor’s office which has launched an investigation.

Local media reported that a pamphlet left at the scene suggested the killings were linked to disputes between gangs involved in fuel theft. Cartels in Mexico frequently leave messages near bodies to threaten rivals or punish behaviour they claim violates their rules.

More Remains Found Elsewhere

Separately, Mexican media reported that another severed head and additional human remains were discovered in the western city of Colima. While Puebla and Tlaxcala have long been home to criminal groups, they are not typically associated with the extreme brutality more common in northern states or along the Pacific coast. But in recent months, bodies have been found near the border between the two states.

Extreme Cartel Violence In Mexico

Decapitation and other displays of violence have been used by Mexican drug cartels for decades to instil fear. In June this year, 20 bodies were found along a road in Sinaloa state, five of them headless. In April 2024, seven bodies- five decapitated and another dismembered- were found in a car abandoned on a busy expressway, each accompanied by a written message. Similar incidents have occurred in Guerrero and southern Mexico in recent years.

Since 2006, when Mexico deployed federal troops to fight cartels, an estimated 480,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence, while about 130,000 remain missing.
