‘If foreigners came to India and condemned Hindu-ness…’: Indian-origin venture capitalist defends JD Vance’s ‘Christian nation’ remarks

'If foreigners came to India and condemned Hindu-ness...': Indian-origin venture capitalist defends JD Vance's 'Christian nation' remarks

Indian-origin venture capitalist Asha Jadeja Motwani came out in support of vice president JD Vance after the MAGA leader said that America will always be a Christian nation.Motwani posted on X after Vance’s speech at the Turning Point USA AmericaFest event. She praised the vice president and said she “loved” his address. She quoted a line from Vance’s monologue where he had said: “America is a Christian nation which does not mean you have to be Christian to be American.”Motwani compared the religious argument with India, asking if Indians would tolerate similar criticism of their religious identity in their own homeland. She said: “If foreigners poured into India and condemned our Hindu-ness and demanded we abandon our religion, would we like it?” Motwani also urged people to watch the “top three speeches” from the event — by Vance, Vivek Ramaswamy, and House Speaker Mike Johnson. Motwani added that she was a proud supporter of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated in September, and she also praised the MAGA movement for pushing back against “wokeism” in American universities. JD Vance’s remarks at the Phoenix put him at the center of controversy again regarding his Hindu wife, Usha. Vance had said during the speech: “The only thing that has truly served as an anchor of the United States of America is that we have been, and by the grace of God, we always will be, a Christian nation.” However, having a brown and Indian wife while preaching Christianity was considered hypocritical by both political bases. GOP bigwigs are concerned that if JD ever runs for president in 2028, his Hindu wife will be accepted by Republicans in the first place. White nationalists would not like to see an Indian first lady whatsoever. Moreover, Asha Jadeja Motwani had earlier claimed she changed US President Trump’s stance on H‑1B visas. She said she discussed the program’s importance with both Trump and Vice President JD Vance and pointed out how top global talent, particularly from India, contributes to the US economy. At that time, Motwani said, “Almost one year into batting for India in Washington DC, I am truly shocked that there is not a single other HNI Indian American helping India in DC.”
