Sonu Nigam: “My job is musical and athletic”; reveals pre-show ritual

Sonu Nigam reveals his 'job is musical but also athetletic', shares unique pre-concert routine: 'I hold hands with my entire team, thank God and the audience'

Legendary singer Sonu Nigam, currently on his ‘Satrangi Re India Tour’, reveals the physical discipline behind his performances. Recovering from a severe back sprain, Nigam describes his job as “athletic,” involving intense gym sessions, tanpura practice, and mental preparation. His three-hour sets continue to captivate audiences across seven major Indian cities.

A legendary singer that he is, Sonu Nigam is known for his soulful vocals like ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ and ‘Yeh Dil Deewana’. In a recent interview, Nigam revealed how he follows a disciplined routine of an athlete. He is currently in the middle of high-octane ‘Satrangi Re India Tour.’ The singer recently opened up about the grueling physical demands of performing three-hour live sets and his journey of recovering from a severe back sprain. He also divulged his pre-concert routine.

Sonu Nigam opens up about his injury

Speaking to Mid day, Sonu Nigam revealed how a concert just doesn’t begin when the lights go up at 7:00 PM; it begins the moment he wakes up. Despite a painful back sprain suffered earlier this year in February, which he described as feeling like a “needle in the spine”, Nigam has maintained a rigorous fitness schedule to keep up with the demands of his seven-city tour.”My job is musical, but also athletic,” Nigam shared. “I have to take care of my fitness level. Sometimes I catch infections because of weather or pollution, but I keep a check on my health and vocal prowess.”

Sonu Nigam reveals his pre-concert ritual

In the same interview, Nigam went on to reveal how he ensures his voice and body are ready for a non-stop three-hour performance by following a strict “day-of” protocol. Nigam revealed, “On the day of the shows, I don’t meet people or go out, however beautiful the place may be. For people, the show starts at 7 pm, but for me, it starts when I wake up. I start getting ready mentally, practice on my tanpura, and work out for an hour at the gym.”One of the most heartwarming revelations from Nigam is his team ritual. Before stepping on stage, he holds hands with his entire team to thank God and the audience. “Before the concert, I hold hands with my entire team, thank God and the audience as they are the reason that I am here. In my mind, it is a huge circle of people holding hands. I’m a little mad like that”

Sonu Nigam pays a tribute to the late Zubeen Garg

Sonu Nigam launched his ‘Deewana Tera’ tour in Guwahati with a moving tribute to Assam’s late icon Zubeen Garg. Performing to a massive, knowledgeable crowd, the singer celebrated the region’s deep musical connection, delivering one of the city’s most memorable and emotionally charged musical evenings in years.

Sonu Nigam on the work front

This year saw Nigam lend his vocals to Sidharth Malhotra for the song ‘Pardesiya’ in ‘Param Sundari’, composed by Sachin Jigar. This was followed by ‘Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari’ using his song ‘Bijuria’, albeit a modern way. Go to Source
