NEW DELHI: Angry with her husband over his “betrayal,” a woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur refused to accept her newborn son but changed her mind after counselling by the hospital, officials said. The woman, who works as a domestic help in Delhi, said she endured labour pain for nearly four hours while travelling on a train before being admitted to the district women’s hospital with the help of the Government Railway Police. She alleged that the husband abandoned her during pregnancy and later eloped with another woman.“He left me when I needed him the most. I was alone, in pain, and survived only with the help of strangers,” she said.Overcome by grief and anger, the woman initially refused to accept the child. Hospital staff intervened and counselled her, after which she agreed to keep the baby. However, she announced that she would raise the child on her own and not give him his father’s name.“It was very difficult to counsel her initially. Once the health of the baby improves, both mother and child will be discharged,” district hospital superintendent in-charge Jai Kumar stated.Till then, the hospital staff will take full care of them and provide all possible assistance, Kumar added.(With PTI inputs)
