‘Can’t explain that moment’: Father reunited with child abducted 40 years ago; mother arrested

‘Can’t explain that moment': Father reunited with child abducted 40 years ago; mother arrested

A woman who went missing from Kentucky as a three-year-old child in 1983 has been located more than four decades later living under a different identity in another state, leading to the arrest of her mother on a custodial interference charge.Michelle Marie Newton, now 46, was reunited with her father and extended family after investigators traced her mother, Debra Newton, to Marion County, Florida, following a single crime stopper’s tip, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. The case, dormant for years, was revived and resolved in 2025, FOX35 reported.

Breakthrough after decades

In April 1983, Debra Newton told family members she was relocating from Louisville to Georgia for a new job and took her daughter Michelle with her. Both vanished soon after. Debra was later indicted for custodial interference and placed on an FBI Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution notice. At one point, she featured on the FBI’s list of most-wanted parental-kidnapping fugitives, authorities said. The case was dismissed in 2000 after officials were unable to reach Michelle’s father, Joseph Newton, and Michelle was removed from national missing-child databases in 2005 due to inaccurate information, according to sheriff’s office records. The investigation was re-indicted in 2016 after a family member urged detectives to re-examine the file.

Tip leads to Florida

Earlier this year, a crime stopper’s tip identified a 66-year-old woman living under the name “Sharon” in Marion County, Florida, as possibly being Debra Newton. A US Marshals Task Force detective compared recent photographs with images from 1983, while DNA collected from Debra’s sister confirmed a match, investigators said.Marion County deputies arrested Debra Newton in November while she was outside her home in The Villages. She was later extradited to Kentucky, where she faces a felony charge of custodial interference, which carries no statute of limitations under state law.

Michelle discovers her true identity

During the investigation, Michelle herself contacted the sheriff’s office after learning about her past, authorities said. She had been living under a different identity in another state and told deputies she did not realise she had been abducted.Officers informed her, “You’re not who you think you are. You’re a missing person. You’re Michelle Marie Newton,” Michelle later told CNN affiliate WLKY.Michelle has since reunited with her father, Joseph Newton, who had searched for her for years. “I can’t explain that moment of walking in and getting to put my arms back around my daughter,” he told WLKY. “It was just like seeing her when she was first born. It was like an angel.”Chief deputy col Steve Healey of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office said the case advanced because of one crucial phone call. “People think calling in tips is ‘snitching.’ It isn’t,” Healey said. “You’re helping victims. You’re helping families. This case proves that one phone call can change a life.”Michelle, meanwhile, said she hopes to support both parents through the legal process. “My intention is to support them both through this and try to navigate and help them both just wrap it up so that we can all heal,” she told WLKY.Debra Newton has been arraigned in Louisville and released on bond. Both Michelle and her father were present in court. Go to Source
