Longest solar eclipse in 100 years to occur in 2027: When, where to watch rare celestial event, India visibility and viewing tips

Daylight will fade, temperatures to drop and the world to fall into the ‘world of total darkness’. A celestial event for which skywatchers across the world are preparing to witness a rare once-in-a-lifetime event. In August 2027, the world is going to witness its rare longest solar eclipse in 100 years, which will experience 6 minutes 23 seconds of total darkness. The dramatic alignment of the Earth, Sun and Moon is going to unfold where the moon will block the sunlight, temperatures drop, and the world may witness the visibility of stars in midday. This would mark the rare once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to watch nature with one of its striking displays.

When and where the longest total solar eclipse of the century is likely to occur

The total solar eclipse on August 2, 2027, will mark the longest eclipse in 100 years, which will stretch across a geographically wide area. As per reports, this would last for 6 minutes and 23 seconds, making it the longest solar eclipse on Earth, with a mesmerising view window to witnessAccording to reports by Eclipse Atlas, the totality begins in the North Atlantic Ocean, which would be roughly in the midpoint of North America and Africa. First landfall of totality is in Morocco, south of Tangier, with a maximum duration of 4 minutes and 50 seconds. The shadow soon covers southern Spain and Gibraltar. Other North African countries in the path of totality are Algeria, Libya, Egypt, and the northeast corners of Sudan and Somalia. The Point of Greatest Eclipse is close to the ancient Egyptian sites of Luxo,r with 6 minutes and 23 seconds, the maximum duration. The shadow next crosses the Red Sea and darkens Jeddah and Makkah of Saudi Arabia before traversing to Sanaa, Yemen. After crossing the Gulf of Aden, totality passes Somalia with the last landfall over the northern reefs of the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean.

Longest solar eclipse in 100 years: What makes this one different

This solar eclipse will mark a historic event with its considerable duration, alignment and visibility to create a rare astronomical event. The longest solar eclipse in a century stands out not only because of how long the Sun remains obscured, but also due to the precise conditions required for such an extended spectacle. This eclipse occurs when the Moon is positioned unusually close to Earth, appearing large enough to cover the Sun completely and for a longer period than typical total eclipses. This particular phenomenon is notable not just for its duration but for its scientific value. The extended totality gives researchers more time to observe the Sun’s corona, study changes in solar wind, and collect high-resolution data on magnetic activity. For the public, it provides an exceptionally long viewing window to experience the dramatic mid-day darkness, temperature drop, and atmospheric changes that accompany a total eclipse.

Will India witness the longest solar eclipse in century

Yes. According to timeanddate.com, India would witness a partial solar eclipse despite a total solar eclipse worldwide. The start of partial visibility will begin from Monday, 2 Aug 2027, 15:34 IST until 17:53 IST, unlike worldwide totality, which India will not be witnessing.

Tips to watch the solar eclipse on August 2, 2027
