US-Iran Conflict: Iran Claims MQ-9 Drone Downed Near Gulf as US-Iran Tensions Escalate After Ceasefire

Tensions between the United States and Iran have sharply escalated despite the ongoing ceasefire following weeks of military confrontation. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed responsibility for shooting down a sophisticated American MQ-9 Reaper drone near the Persian Gulf, intensifying fears of renewed conflict in the region. According to Iranian officials, the drone was allegedly conducting surveillance operations close to strategic waters near the Strait of Hormuz when it was targeted. The IRGC described the action as retaliation after reports that American forces killed four Iranian personnel during a recent military exchange near the same region. Iran has further claimed that it has destroyed multiple MQ-9 Reaper drones in previous confrontations, though independent verification of these claims remains unavailable. The MQ-9 Reaper is considered one of the United States’ most advanced unmanned aerial systems. It can operate at altitudes of nearly 40,000 feet and remain airborne for up to 40 hours. The drone is equipped with automatic takeoff and landing systems and can carry out missions during nighttime operations using advanced surveillance and targeting technology. Reports suggest the drone’s cost ranges between hundreds of crores in Indian currency, making its reported destruction a significant strategic and symbolic claim by Iran. In another major development, Iran also claimed that its defense systems detected an American F-35 stealth fighter jet during recent military activity near Bandar Abbas in southern Iran. The F-35 is designed to evade radar and infrared detection, making the Iranian claim particularly notable. Reports indicate that recent American strikes targeted Iranian air defense infrastructure near the port region. The latest developments have once again raised concerns about military escalation in the Gulf region, with global attention now focused on whether the fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran can survive mounting retaliation claims and military posturing.
