Explosions were reported at multiple locations in Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, triggering alarm across the region. News agency Reuters confirmed hearing loud sounds, while Al Jazeera’s local correspondent reported explosions accompanied by fire.
The blasts were not limited to the capital. An explosion was also reported at La Guaira Port in the city of Maiquetía. Following the incidents, Venezuela’s airspace was completely cleared, with aircraft diverting from their original routes.
US Imposes Airspace Restrictions
In response to the situation, the United States imposed a security-related ban on all US civilian aircraft entering Venezuelan airspace. The restriction was announced through a notification issued by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), citing safety reasons. The ban does not apply to US military aircraft and helicopters.
Colombian President Calls For Emergency Meetings
Colombian President Gustavo Petro reacted strongly to the explosions in Caracas. He said, “At this moment, Caracas is being bombed. The whole world must remain alert; Venezuela has been attacked. Missile bombardment is taking place.” He further urged the Organization of American States (OAS) and the United Nations to convene emergency meetings immediately.
