Middle East conflict: Nuclear Dispute and Hidden Uranium Stockpile Key Reasons Behind US-Iran Talks Failure

The collapse of negotiations between the United States and Iran in Islamabad was largely driven by disagreements over Iran’s nuclear program and uranium stockpile. The US, led by Vice President JD Vance, demanded that Iran halt uranium enrichment and remove nearly 900 pounds of enriched uranium, along with guarantees that it would not restart its nuclear program in the future. However, Iran did not agree to these conditions, maintaining that its nuclear activities are for peaceful purposes. Reports suggest that around 460 kg of enriched uranium remains hidden, raising concerns in Washington and Tel Aviv about potential weaponization. Additionally, tensions over the Strait of Hormuz—a crucial global oil route—further complicated talks, as Iran insisted on maintaining control. With both sides unwilling to compromise, the trilateral discussions involving Pakistan failed, increasing fears of renewed instability and escalating geopolitical tensions in the region.
