GEN Z Impact: Youth Vote May Decide Bangladesh’s Next Prime Minister

As voting continues in Bangladesh’s 13th parliamentary elections, ground reports from Dhaka indicate strong voter turnout, with long queues seen outside polling booths. Many voters were seen waiting patiently to cast their ballots, reflecting high public interest in the first general election after the 2024 coup. Women voters and first-time voters were also seen participating actively, highlighting the significance of the election. Security forces have been deployed in large numbers to ensure peaceful polling amid past concerns of election-related violence. International observers are also present to monitor the electoral process. Early voter interactions suggest that many participants believe the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, holds a strong position. However, the contest remains tight as Jamaat-e-Islami, led by Shafiqur Rahman, along with its alliance partner National Citizen Party (NCP), is also receiving visible support, especially among youth voters. Awami League supporters, despite their party not contesting the elections, are expected to play a decisive role. Analysts suggest that their voting choices could determine whether BNP or the Jamaat-led alliance forms the next government.
