Bangladesh Election: BNP Sweeps Polls, Tarique Rahman’s Return Signals Historic Comeback

A dramatic political shift is unfolding in Bangladesh, as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) appears set to return to power after 17 years. According to Bangladeshi media reports and ongoing vote counting trends, the party led by Tarique Rahman has secured a massive victory, winning 209 seats so far. Meanwhile, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has reportedly won around 69 seats. With the majority mark comfortably crossed, the BNP has already posted on social media platform X claiming it will form the next government. Tarique Rahman’s swearing-in as Prime Minister is now seen as almost certain, pending official confirmation by the Election Commission. Voter turnout was high, with strong participation from women and youth. Observers say the electorate has delivered a clear message favoring change and development. Notably, the Awami League did not participate in the elections after being banned, which significantly influenced the outcome. Many of its supporters are believed to have shifted their backing to the BNP. Tarique Rahman’s return to Bangladesh after 17 years in London is being viewed as a major political comeback. The BNP last ruled the country from 2001 to 2006 under Khaleda Zia. Reports suggest the Election Commission may hold a press conference around 10 AM for official confirmation. Party sources indicate that the new government could be sworn in around February 17. With over 200 seats secured, the BNP is poised for a decisive mandate, marking a historic turnaround in Bangladesh’s political landscape.
