Bangladesh Election: BNP Set for Massive Comeback After 17 Years

In a dramatic political development, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) appears set to return to power in Bangladesh after 17 years, riding what supporters are calling a “wave” in the general election results. According to Bangladeshi media reports and early counting trends, the BNP, led by Tarique Rahman, is leading in over 209 seats, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 151 seats in the 300-member parliament. Meanwhile, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is reportedly ahead in around 60–70 seats. With counting still underway, the BNP has already claimed victory on social media platform X and expressed confidence about forming the next government. If the current trends hold, Tarique Rahman is widely expected to become the next Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Voter turnout was reportedly high, with long queues seen outside polling stations. Youth and women participated in significant numbers, signaling a strong public push for political stability. The BNP last formed the government in 2001 but has remained out of power since 2006. Tarique Rahman, who spent years abroad in London, has now made a significant political comeback. Notably, the Awami League did not participate in this election. Analysts suggest that many of its traditional supporters, along with minority voters, appear to have shifted toward the BNP, contributing to its sweeping lead. Celebrations have reportedly begun among BNP supporters and alliance workers across the country. However, the final confirmation will come after the official announcement by the Election Commission.
