Renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg passed away at 52 in Singapore after suffering a seizure while swimming at Lazarus Island, confirmed by his wife, Garima Saikia Garg. Initial reports had mentioned that the singer passed away in a scuba diving accident.

“Zubeen, along with seven or eight others, including drummer Shekhar and Sidhartha, went to the island on a yacht. They swam together and returned to the shore on the yacht. All of them were wearing life jackets. But Zubeen went to swim again and suffered a seizure attack,” Garima was quoted by The Times of India.

“He suffered seizure attacks on several occasions earlier but escaped death. Other team members rescued him after seeing something unusual. He was kept in the ICU at Singapore General Hospital for about two hours,” said Garima, refuting claims of a scuba diving accident.

What is a Seizure?

A seizure is a sudden, temporary surge of excessive electrical activity in the brain that disrupts normal brain function. This can affect behaviour, movement, sensation, or consciousness. Seizures vary widely – from brief staring spells to full-body convulsions. Experts estimate that up to 10 per cent of people globally may experience at least one seizure in their lifetime.

Types of Seizures

  • Generalised Seizures: Electrical activity begins on both sides of the brain, often causing shaking or staring episodes.
  • Focal Seizures: Begin in one part of the brain, affecting one side of the body initially, but may sometimes spread to both sides.

Signs and Symptoms to Watch For

Seizure symptoms depend on type and severity and may include:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Convulsions or uncontrollable muscle spasms
  • Staring spells
  • Sudden emotional changes like fear, joy, or confusion
  • Teeth clenching, drooling, and abnormal eye movements
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Involuntary vocalisations

Causes of Seizures

Seizures may be provoked (triggered by temporary conditions like illness, injury, or blood sugar changes) or unprovoked (spontaneous, epileptic seizures). During a seizure, brain cells fire uncontrollably, overloading the affected areas and impairing normal functions such as movement and consciousness.

Why Seizures Can Be Fatal in Water

Seizures themselves are not always life-threatening, but when they occur in risky environments, such as while driving or swimming, they can quickly turn fatal. In water, a person experiencing a seizure may lose consciousness or control over their movements, making them unable to keep their airway clear. This dramatically increases the risk of drowning, even for strong swimmers.
