Women with PCOS are more prone to fungal infections during the rainy season. Experts share tips on hygiene, diet, and lifestyle to stay safe.

Maintaining hygiene and wearing breathable clothing can reduce infection risk.
The rainy season, with its high humidity and fluctuating temperatures, can be a challenging time for women with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome). Beyond mood swings and hormonal imbalances, this period increases the risk of fungal infections, especially vaginal yeast infections caused by Candida. Simple environmental factors like damp clothing, poor air circulation, and unclean washrooms create the perfect breeding ground for fungi.
Dr. Spurthy G Janney, Consultant – Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Manipal Hospital Whitefield, Bengaluru, explains, “With the rainy season around, many women complain of itching, discharge, or discomfort. Women with PCOS are at a higher risk of developing fungal infections because the protective bacteria in the vagina are reduced, and the pH balance shifts, creating an ideal environment for Candida to thrive.”

Why PCOS Increases Susceptibility
PCOS affects multiple systems in the body. Dr. Janney notes, “Over time, many women with PCOS develop insulin resistance, leading to higher androgen levels. This triggers inflammation, alters the microbiome, and weakens the defence system: factors that favour fungal growth.” She adds that gut bacteria changes in PCOS can also reduce immunity, making infections harder to fight.
Dr. Shibani Devi, Consultant Obstetrics & Gynaecologist, Manipal Hospital, Bhubaneswar, emphasises, “PCOS already disrupts hormone levels and blood sugar. The humid monsoon conditions add fatigue, stress, and poor sleep, worsening the hormonal imbalance. Women become more prone to skin, urinary tract, and fungal infections. Candida thrives in warm, moist environments, especially in those with high insulin resistance and elevated blood sugar.”
Practical Steps to Protect Intimate Health
Experts agree that prevention is key. Maintaining intimate hygiene, keeping the body dry, and wearing loose, breathable clothing can reduce infection risk. Dr. Devi advises, “Engage in indoor yoga, avoid fried foods and sugary drinks, use antifungal powder if necessary, and pay attention to personal hygiene. Vaginal itching or unusual discharge should prompt a visit to rule out candidiasis.”
Probiotics are another effective tool. “They help restore the vaginal microbiome and prevent recurrent infections,” Dr. Janney says. Lifestyle interventions such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, and stress management are not just good for PCOS overall; they directly reduce fungal susceptibility.
The monsoon may be a season of rains, but for women with PCOS, it’s also a time to be vigilant about intimate health. Humidity, damp clothing, and hormonal imbalances can trigger fungal infections. Experts advise proactive hygiene, dietary discipline, and mindful lifestyle habits to stay safe. “Even minor actions like keeping the area dry and taking probiotics can make a significant difference,” says Dr. Janney.
With careful attention, women with PCOS can enjoy the rainy season without compromising their health.
