Even though high in nutritional value, consumption of guavas could leave certain individuals prone to health risks and diseases in the long run.

Guava can cause digestive issues in people with frequent bloating.

Full of Vitamin C, dietary fibre, potassium and critical antioxidants, guava is a favourite fruit for many due to its highly nutritious value and a sweet, tangy taste. Eating guava in the Indian summers helps support the body’s immune system, digestion process, skin health and overall well-being.

Given its multi-beneficial presence, guava is often taken as a healthy salad or snack with a sprinkle of chaat masala in Indian households. It is also consumed with smoothies, mixed juices and jams that kids love.

Guava, however, is not suited for everyone. While packed with nutrients, excess consumption of the fruit could lead to digestive troubles, blood sugar spikes, allergic reactions or even skin irritation in certain individuals. If you frequently encounter bloating and are prone to diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or eczema, be cautious about the number of guavas you consume.

Here are four types of people who should either avoid guavas or take them only in moderate quantities.

Those Who Face Frequent Bloating

In sensitive individuals who experience frequent bloating, guava’s dense fructose and Vitamin C content can aggravate the problem. When the human body consumes more Vitamin C than its capacity, the extra portion ferments in the intestines and leads to gas issues and stomach discomfort. For individuals suffering from fructose malabsorption, the guava could trigger abdominal swelling and flatulence, as their small intestine struggles to absorb fructose easily.

Diabetic Patients

Due to its low glycemic index, doctors advise patients to eat the guava since it releases its sugar slowly into the blood. Eating too many guavas at a time can raise the blood sugar levels and worsen the struggles for diabetic patients. People suffering from any type of diabetes should limit their intake to a maximum of two small guavas on a given day.

IBS Patients

People suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) are also vulnerable to guavas’ side effects and health risks. In healthy individuals, guava’s soluble and insoluble fibres aid digestion and counter constipation. But for people with IBS or other sensitive gastrointestinal conditions, excess consumption of guavas can be a digestive hazard.

If You Have Eczema or Sensitive Skin

The bioactive compounds of guava and its leaves can irritate certain skin types. Excess consumption of the popular fruit may exacerbate eczema or chronic skin conditions. It causes redness, itchiness, or inflammation. Such individuals should either avoid guavas completely or consult a dermatologist before taking them.
