Unwanted facial hair is a concern for many women and is often linked to genetic factors or hormonal changes. While some experience only light growth that goes largely unnoticed, others struggle with thick and dense hair that can affect their confidence. With a wide range of options now available, from hair removal creams to threading, waxing, razors, and even laser treatments, the key question remains: which method is the safest and most effective without damaging the skin?
Dubai-based skin specialist Dr Javeria Atif explains that many women turn to facial hair removal creams. However, she warns that prolonged use of these products can be harmful, leading to pigmentation, dark spots, and allergic reactions. In attempting to solve one issue, women may unintentionally invite more serious skin problems.

Threading continues to be a popular choice because it is quick and affordable. Yet, Dr Atif cautions that it can cause redness, bumps, irritation, and itching, particularly for those with sensitive skin. She notes that repeated threading is not ideal for maintaining long-term skin health.
Waxing is another widely used method but is often unsuitable for the delicate skin of the face. It can strip away the upper layer of skin, leaving it dry and dull, and over time, frequent waxing may also loosen the skin. Dr Atif advises that, if chosen, waxing should always be carried out cautiously and preferably with professional guidance.
For longer-lasting results, she recommends razors and laser treatments. When used correctly, razors can safely and painlessly remove hair at home. Laser treatment, though more expensive, is considered the most effective option. It not only slows hair regrowth but can also significantly reduce it over time.
Although laser treatment requires greater investment, it offers better safety and results in the long term. Experts emphasise that women should avoid rushing into quick-fix methods that risk damaging the skin.
Dr Atif advises steering clear of facial hair removal creams, limiting the use of threading and waxing, and considering razors or laser treatments for safer and more sustainable outcomes.
