Polar Latitudes adds ‘Discoverer’ to fleet, expands Antarctic expedition Programme

Polar Latitudes Expeditions has announced the addition of a new expedition vessel, Discoverer, to its fleet, marking a strategic expansion of its Antarctic cruise programme. The ship will begin operations for the 2026–27 Antarctic season, replacing the current vessel Seaventure.

The move represents a shift in the company’s operating model from chartered vessels to owned ships, providing greater control over expedition planning, onboard experiences and overall product delivery.

“By replacing a chartered vessel with one that we own, we strengthen our ability to shape the expedition experience from start to finish,” said Anders Kristensen, Chief Commercial Officer at Polar Latitudes Expeditions. “This allows us to refine every aspect of the journey, from expedition planning to onboard learning, ensuring travellers experience Antarctica in the most immersive way possible.”

Discoverer brings with it a strong legacy in polar exploration. Built at the Rauma shipyard in Finland, the vessel has previously operated under names including Silver Explorer and Prince Albert II, navigating some of the world’s most remote regions. It underwent a significant refurbishment in 2023, with upgrades to accommodation, technical systems and public areas. Additional enhancements are planned ahead of its deployment in Antarctica.

From the 2026–27 season, Discoverer will operate all previously scheduled departures that were assigned to Seaventure. Guests already booked on these voyages will be accommodated on the new vessel in equivalent cabin categories.

The addition of the ship will also allow Polar Latitudes to expand its Antarctic sailing programme, particularly during peak travel periods. Key itineraries will include the Crossing the Antarctic Circle voyage, a milestone journey for expedition travellers.

Beyond Antarctica, Discoverer will be deployed on voyages for sister brand Heritage Expeditions. In early 2027, the vessel is expected to explore new routes through the Chilean fjords, marking the company’s entry into Patagonia.

The expansion comes at a time of growing demand for expedition cruising, particularly among Indian travellers seeking remote and experience-led journeys. Destinations such as Antarctica and the Arctic are witnessing increased interest from luxury and adventure segments.

Polar Latitudes Expeditions continues to focus on small-ship expeditions, expert-led programmes and responsible travel practices designed to minimise environmental impact while enhancing traveller engagement with fragile ecosystems.

Founder John McKeon said, “We have had many successful seasons with Seaventure, and we are grateful for the journeys we have shared. At the same time, Discoverer represents the next step in our long-term vision of building one of the most comprehensive expedition cruise programmes in the industry. There is much more to come.”

The addition of Discoverer marks a new phase in the company’s growth strategy, aimed at expanding capacity, diversifying itineraries and strengthening its position in the global expedition cruise market.
