Forget vows, Gen Z’s fake Indian weddings are all about vibes, aesthetics, and viral moments. Here’s why these experiential festivals are booming.

Indian Gen Zs are throwing Fake Weddings for fun

Indian weddings have always been larger than life, grand ceremonies that blend culture, family, food, and festivity into one unforgettable celebration. But Gen Z is pushing the boundaries of what a wedding means, and in some cases, whether it needs to be “real” at all. Enter the “fake Indian wedding”, a cultural phenomenon where young people throw elaborate, wedding-style parties without the legal or familial binding of marriage.

These aren’t just gimmicks. They are a reflection of shifting cultural values, where self-expression, aesthetics, and digital storytelling take center stage.

A Festival of Self-Expression

According to DJ Krish aka TBOM, this new-age approach reflects a generational mindset, “Gen Z is completely redefining what a wedding means. For them, it’s not about following traditional rules, but about crafting immersive experiences and curating a strong digital presence. They’re attending ‘weddings that aren’t real’ because these events serve as a powerful platform for self-expression. They use them to tell stories, express their creativity, and create viral, shareable moments online. This trend shows that this generation sees a wedding not just as a ceremony, but as a dynamic, experiential festival where they can celebrate relationships in a fun, unconventional way.”

In essence, these events are more than parties, they are theatrical productions where guests become part of the narrative, dressing up and participating in the drama of “marriage” without any of its real-world responsibilities.

A Vibe Over a Vow

For many Gen Zers, the appeal lies in the vibe. Palak Gupta, herself part of the generation embracing this trend, describes it as a chance to live out cinematic fantasies, “We’re attending these ‘fake weddings’ because it’s more like a themed party with a purpose. It’s less about tradition and more about the overall vibe and aesthetic. These parties are basically experiential festivals where we can express ourselves, have fun, and celebrate relationships without all the pressure of a real ceremony. It’s about getting that main character energy, curating a cool story for our social feeds, and making unforgettable memories with friends. The realness isn’t in a piece of paper, it’s in the unique and shareable moments we create together.”

It’s not marriage Gen Z is chasing, but rather the magic, glamour, and social value that comes from being part of a wedding spectacle minus the obligations.

When Brands Join the Celebration

Recognizing the cultural shift, brands and event curators are also stepping in. A spokesperson from Mercii, a lifestyle and experiences brand, shares how they’ve tapped into the trend:

“What started off as a quirky experiment has quickly turned into a cultural trend. At Mercii, we hosted a fake wedding party and saw firsthand the kind of excitement it generated. People crave the drama, fun, and togetherness of an Indian wedding without the obligations or pressure. These events give guests the chance to dress up, play a role, and lose themselves in the spectacle. It’s part nostalgia, part theatre, and very much about today’s culture of wanting big, shareable, communal experiences. In many ways, the rise of fake weddings reflects how young people are redefining celebration itself, making it joyful, dramatic, and Instagram-worthy, but ultimately stress-free.”

A New Form of Celebration

The rise of fake weddings isn’t about undermining the sanctity of marriage. Instead, it’s about reimagining celebration in a world where identity, community, and social media are deeply intertwined. Just as Indian weddings once evolved from intimate family gatherings into mega cultural showcases, they are now morphing into something more playful and experimental.

For today’s generation, the memories, the laughter, the photos, and the shared vibe are the vows that matter most.
