Sweden, renowned for its innovation-driven economy, flat work culture, and high quality of life, is now offering Indians and other foreigners the opportunity to apply for Permanent Residency (PR). This status frees individuals from the cycle of renewing permits every few years, providing long-term security and granting rights similar to those of European Union nationals.

But there’s a catch. For Indians aspiring to make the Nordic nation their home, the path to Permanent Residency (PR) has become more structured and demanding, as the Swedish government has tightened its rules.

From June 17, 2025, the Swedish Migration Agency requires foreign workers to earn at least 80% of Sweden’s median salary to qualify for a work permit and, eventually, PR.

Read on to learn about eligibility, application fees, the process, and everything else you need to know.

Sweden PR Eligibility for Indians

To qualify for Permanent Residency (PR) in Sweden, Indian applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a valid Swedish work permit for 48 months (typically granted in two 2-year terms).
  • Have worked for at least 44 months in the past seven years.
  • Provide proof of income, housing, and good conduct.
  • Have no criminal record.
  • Apply no earlier than 30 days before your current permit expires.

Sweden PR Application: How To Apply

  • Step 1: Apply via the Swedish Migration Agency website.
  • Step 2: Upload all required documents, including salary slips, housing proof, and your employment contract.
  • Step 3: Pay the application fee online and wait for a case officer to be assigned to your application.
  • Step 4: Provide biometrics if requested by the authorities.
  • Step 5: Once your application is processed, wait for the decision and collect your PR card.

Sweden PR: Key Documents Required

Before applying for the PR, keep the following documents handy:

  • Valid passport with a recent entry stamp.
  • Employment contract and recent payslips
  • Proof of housing (rental agreement or ownership papers)
  • Bank statements, tax returns, and insurance
  • Proof of family ties (if applying with dependents)

New Income Rule for Sweden PR: What’s Changed?

To align with Sweden’s rising economic standards, the government has increased the financial requirements. Indians must earn a minimum of SEK 29,680 per month (roughly Rs 2.76 lakh) before tax. The rule applies to new and extension applications submitted from June 17, 2025.

However, there are some exceptions. EU/EEA citizens, Blue Card holders, seasonal workers, researchers, interns, athletes, and au pairs are exempt from these new rules.

Cost of Applying for Sweden PR

The application fee to apply for permanent residency is about Rs 14,000, comparatively modest to other countries. While the fee is modest (₹14,000), there are hidden costs during the time of paperwork and waiting time.

Some companies cover permit fees for employees and their families. If not, employers may still offer support by proposing payment plans for dependents. If you apply independently, keep in mind that travel is restricted during review, and decisions may take months or even years.

Can Sweden Revoke PR?

Yes, PR can be cancelled if you stop meeting the conditions. The Migration Agency can revoke your permit if:

  • You move out of Sweden for extended periods or spend too much time abroad.
  • Provide false information when applying.
  • PR can also be revoked if you fail to comply with Swedish residency norms.

Key Challenges Indians Should Watch For

Even with clear rules, applicants can face several challenges. Processing times can be long, sometimes stretching to years, and travel may be restricted while applications are under review. Employers may not always support dependent visas, and regulations can change mid-process, occasionally with retroactive effect. Additionally, even minor legal issues can affect the approval of your application.

PR vs Citizenship: What’s The Difference?

  • Permanent Residency (PR)PR allows you to live and work in Sweden indefinitely, travel freely within the Schengen Zone, and eliminates the need for permit renewals. Most importantly, you continue to retain your Indian citizenship.
  • Citizenship

Swedish citizenship grants a passport, voting rights, full EU benefits, and the option to renounce Indian citizenship if desired. To qualify, you generally need five years of residence with PR (shorter if married to a Swedish citizen) along with a clean record of good conduct.
