R&B singer Montell Jordan’s cancer has returned nearly a year after his prostate was removed. On Wednesday, the 56-year-old said follow-up scans showed cancer in his lymph nodes.

“I thought I would be telling my prostate cancer story from the other side of prostate cancer because I had a radical prostatectomy. My prostate was removed, and there were clear margins,” the ‘Let’s Ride’ star said on the TODAY show. “Close to a year post-prostatectomy, I still need to go back and have additional treatments because it’s been detected that there is still cancer.”

Jordan is now set to receive targeted radiation for lymph node cancer and hormone therapy to slow its progression.

His prostate cancer was initially detected in early 2024 via a PSA test, which measures Prostate-Specific Antigen, a protein produced by the prostate. High PSA levels can indicate the presence of cancer, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

What Is Prostate Cancer?

This is a type of cancer that originates in the prostate gland, a small, walnut-shaped organ located below the bladder and in front of the rectum in men. This gland produces fluid that nourishes and transports sperm. Prostate cancer occurs when cells in the prostate begin to grow uncontrollably, forming a tumour, according to the National Cancer Institute.

It is the most common cancer among men in the United States and the second leading cause of cancer death in American men. While prostate cancer can develop at any age, it is more common in older men, particularly those over 65, as per Medline.

Early Signs Of Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer often develops slowly and may not present symptoms in its early stages. As the disease progresses, certain signs may show.

According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Cancer Institute, the warning signs are:

Urinary Symptoms:

  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Difficulty starting or stopping urination
  • Weak or interrupted urine flow
  • Pain or burning sensation during urination
  • Blood in the urine, which may appear pink, red, or cola-coloured
  • Trouble emptying the bladder

Sexual Health Changes:

  • Painful ejaculation
  • Blood in the semen

Pain And Discomfort:

  • Persistent pain in the back, hips, or pelvis that doesn’t go away

These symptoms may also be caused by conditions other than prostate cancer, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or prostatitis, as per the CDC. It is essential to consult a medical professional for an accurate diagnosis.
