The monsoon season brings much-needed relief from the scorching summer heat, but it also poses unique challenges for the skin. Increased humidity, clogged pores, excessive oil secretion, and exposure to rainwater often lead to breakouts, dullness, and infections. According to beauty and wellness expert Shahnaz Husain, the key to healthy skin during the rainy season is adopting a conscious routine that balances cleansing, hydration, and protection.

A Complete Skincare Routine for Monsoons

Recommended Stories

1. Cleanse Twice Daily

During monsoons, skin is more prone to dirt, grime, and oil buildup. Wash your face twice a day once in the morning and once after returning home or before bedtime. Choose a gentle herbal cleanser with natural ingredients like neem, tulsi, papaya, or aloe vera, which help control oiliness and maintain clear skin.

2. Exfoliate Regularly

Blocked pores are one of the biggest causes of monsoon breakouts. Use a mild, creamy scrub to exfoliate twice a week. This not only removes dead skin but also rejuvenates and refreshes the complexion.

3. Soothe with Face Masks

A face mask is essential for calming inflamed or sensitive skin. Shahnaz recommends a simple DIY turmeric mask: mix half a teaspoon of raw turmeric with a tablespoon of rose water (such as Sharose), apply for 20 minutes, and rinse off. The result is instantly brighter, glowing skin.

4. Moisturise—Don’t Skip It

Even in humid weather, the skin can lose moisture. Opt for a light, mattifying moisturiser to hydrate without clogging pores. Aloe vera gel is an excellent natural option; apply it for 30 minutes and rinse off for refreshed, supple skin.

5. Treat Breakouts Naturally

For acne-prone skin, prepare neem water by boiling neem leaves in water, straining it, and using it to rinse your face daily. Its antibacterial properties help reduce pimples and infections.

6. Manage Excess Oil

Carry blotting papers and switch to oil-free skincare and makeup products to control shine and keep skin feeling fresh throughout the day.

Monsoon Skincare Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s:

Hydrate your skin at night to maintain elasticity.

Drink plenty of fluids, especially fresh coconut water.

Include raw salads in your diet to support gut health and clear skin.

Keep makeup minimal to avoid clogged pores.

Use a Multani Mitti (Fuller’s Earth) face pack once a week to absorb excess oil.

Don’ts:

Avoid heavy makeup that blocks pores.

Steer clear of harsh cleansers and chemical-based products.

Don’t neglect or ignore early signs of skin problems.

Refrain from picking at acne or pimples.

Never compromise on basic hygiene.

Do not skip sunscreen, even on cloudy days.

Diet for Radiant Skin in Monsoons

While topical care is important, diet plays a key role in skin health. Shahnaz advises including:

Citrus fruits like oranges and lemons for Vitamin C.

Antioxidant-rich fruits such as papaya, litchi, and pears.

Seeds and nuts like flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts for omega-3 fatty acids.

Fatty fish such as salmon to reduce inflammation and redness.

At the same time, limit oily, fried, and processed foods that can aggravate skin issues. While it’s natural to crave fried snacks during the rains, indulge occasionally—once a month rather than frequently for healthier skin.

The Bottom Line

Monsoon may bring challenges, but with the right care, it can also be a season of radiance. By following a simple yet consistent routine of cleansing, exfoliation, hydration, and mindful eating, you can keep your skin glowing despite the damp weather. As Shahnaz Husain reminds us, true beauty is the balance of external care and internal nourishment and the rainy season is the perfect time to practice both.
