There are lunches that refuel you, and then there are lunches that transport you. My afternoon at Madam Chow, The Oberoi Gurgaon was firmly the latter, a sensory escape into Asian flavors and refined design.

Set inside a glass pavilion overlooking the Oberoi’s blue reflective pool, the restaurant feels calm, bright, and airy during the day. Sunlight filters through suspended ceramic tiles, scattering soft patterns across wood, stone, and glass. It’s the kind of space that makes you want to linger, to savor not just food but the pause it gives you.

At lunch, I decided to skip alcohol and explore Madam Chow’s non-alcoholic cocktail menu, which was as imaginative as the food itself. I tried the Emerald Bloom, a delicate balance of guava freshness with lavender florals and a touch of kaffir lime, it was bright, soothing, and refreshingly refined, the perfect start to the meal. The menu also offered equally intriguing choices like the Imperial Lantern, with its exotic blend of banana, citrus, and a whisper of chilli heat; the Azure Horizon, a sapphire-hued cooler of peach and lime; the fiery Golden Ember with spiced citrus and ginger warmth; and the Mandarin Garden, a zesty, mint-laced ode to fortune and abundance.

A Dim Sum Affair

Lunch began with a selection of dim sums by Chef Mark Lin, and honestly, they could have been the whole meal. The Lychee Bonsai Bao was a piece of art, playful in presentation and subtly sweet. The Sheng Jian Bao had that perfect contrast: golden crisp outside, juicy inside. I also tried the Harmony Siu Mai and Ocean Silk Cheong Fun, each delicate, each bite-sized parcel bursting with freshness.

The Mains: Tradition Elevated

Chef Wong Kwai Wah’s Guangdong and Sichuan specialties formed the heart of lunch. The Xiang La Tofu was all silk and spice, a dish that surprised me with its depth. And then there was the Zhenglong Whole Silver Pomfret, steamed, simple, and utterly divine in its freshness.

Everything felt balanced not heavy, not fussy, just food that allowed flavors to shine. Exactly how lunch should feel.

A Sweet, Surprising Finish

Dessert at lunch usually feels like an indulgence, but here it was impossible to resist. The Jasmine Tea Mai Lai Go was light and fragrant, almost like eating a cloud with a hint of florals. The Slow-baked Chinese Red Date Pudding had a warm, homey richness, while the Sichuan Peppercorn Ice Cream was the most surprising cooling and creamy with a gentle tingle that made me laugh mid-bite.

A Lunch to Remember

What I loved most was how immersive the experience felt. The energy of the open kitchen, the shimmer of the pool outside, the thoughtfulness in every service detail, it’s Oberoi hospitality at its best.
