The matcha fever has taken social media by storm over the past few months, with countless people trying their hand at this vibrant green drink. Matcha is made from finely ground, shade-grown green tea leaves. Unlike regular green tea, which is steeped and discarded, matcha is consumed in its entirety, offering a concentrated dose of antioxidants and health benefits.

But as the craze intensifies, one woman recently revealed in an interview how her obsession with the trendy beverage landed her in the hospital.

Woman Hospitalised After Drinking Matcha

According to a report by Newsweek, a 28-year-old nurse, Lynn Shazeen, from Washington, DC, turned to matcha after learning about its anti-inflammatory benefits. At first, she limited her intake to once a week. But within three months, she began noticing troubling symptoms, including constant exhaustion, persistent itching, and an unusual cold sensation in her body.

Later, after consulting her doctor, Lynn underwent a blood test and was shocked to learn that she was suffering from severe anaemia. Although she already had a history of the condition, her excessive matcha intake had only worsened it. “Despite rounds of iron infusions previously, I was prescribed iron pills with Vitamin C to this date,” she said.

After her iron levels dropped significantly, Lynn quit Matcha and turned back to regular tea, which gave her positive results.

What Is Anaemia?

It is a blood condition that causes a lack of healthy red blood cells that carry oxygen throughout the body. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the most visible sign of anaemia is fatigue, followed by chest pain, dizziness, frequent infections, headaches and even shortness of breath.

Side Effects Of Matcha

Health experts reportedly caution that while matcha has many benefits, drinking it in excess may cause certain side effects:

  • Insomnia & Rapid Heartbeat: Since matcha contains caffeine, high intake may reportedly disrupt sleep, increase heart rate, and cause restlessness.
  • Digestive Issues: The caffeine and tannins in matcha may reportedly irritate the stomach, especially if consumed on an empty stomach, leading to nausea or discomfort.
  • Uneasiness: Despite containing L-theanine (which promotes calmness), matcha’s caffeine content may still trigger uneasiness in sensitive individuals.
  • Reduced Iron Absorption: Tannins and catechins in matcha may reportedly interfere with the absorption of plant-based iron, which could worsen anaemia if consumed in large amounts.

Notably, Matcha can also do wonders if consumed in moderation.
