As Ganesh Chaturthi approaches on August 27, homes, streets, and community pandals across India are coming alive with preparations. Known as Vinayaka Chavithi in southern states, the festival marks the first major celebration of the monsoon season, with Lord Ganesha’s idols installed for anywhere between one and nine days, and in some regions, even up to a month, before immersion ceremonies conclude the festivities.

But every year, one question keeps popping up among devotees: Which direction should Lord Ganesha’s trunk face—left, right, or straight? Does it change the blessings or significance of the idol?
To clear the air, Visakhapatnam-based Vedic scholar Kandukuri Balasubramaniam Sharma has shared insights that might bring relief to many. He explains that regardless of the trunk’s direction, worshipping Ganesha with devotion always brings blessings. The direction, however, does carry symbolic meaning in spiritual traditions.
Left-facing trunk: The easily appeased “Modaka Hasta”
According to Sharma, idols with the trunk bending left, known as Modaka Hasta, are the most popular among devotees, especially in southern India. This form is believed to be easily appeased, showering blessings quickly on those who worship sincerely. It symbolises comfort, calmness, and the fulfillment of wishes.
Right-facing trunk: The disciplined “Yoga Ganapati”
The right-bending trunk, called Yoga Ganapati, is associated with deeper spiritual practices. Sharma explains that this form demands strict discipline, unwavering devotion, and purity in rituals. It is often worshipped by yogis and spiritual seekers aiming for self-realisation and liberation. Unlike the left-facing form, this Ganesha is not easily appeased but rewards devotees with spiritual growth and ultimate salvation.
Vertical trunk: The powerful ‘Siddhi Vinayaka’
When Lord Ganesha’s trunk points straight up, he is worshipped as Siddhi Vinayaka, the bestower of success and accomplishments. Devotees believe this form brings strength, determination, and achievement in personal and professional endeavours.
What Devotees Should Know
Ultimately, there is no “inauspicious” direction for Lord Ganesha’s trunk, Sharma stresses. Whether left, right, or vertical, what matters most is devotion, sincerity, and respect for tradition. The symbolism varies, but the blessings flow to all who worship with a pure heart.
So, as devotees select idols this Ganesh Chaturthi, they can rest assured: the direction of the trunk carries meaning, but not omens. What truly counts is faith, devotion, and the spirit of the festival.
