After Dussehra, eye redness, irritation, and vision blurs are common due to pollution, fireworks, and seasonal allergies.

Dussehra is one of India’s most celebrated festivals, marked by fireworks, crackers, and large gatherings. However, along with the festivities comes increased exposure to smoke, dust, and pollution. These factors can significantly impact eye health, leading to redness, irritation, or, in severe cases, even vision problems.

According to Dr Pawan Gupta, Senior Cataract & Retina Surgeon, Eye 7 Hospitals, Lajpat Nagar, and Vision Eye Clinic, New Delhi, here’s what you need to watch out for:

Recommended Stories

Pollution and Allergy-Related Redness

During and after Dussehra, the rise in pollution levels combined with dust in the environment makes eye redness a common complaint. This is often due to allergic reactions or irritation caused by pollutants.

Firework-Related Injuries

Accidents caused by crackers or flying debris such as bow-and-arrow toys or splinters from firecrackers can lead to eye injuries. In mild cases, this may cause a corneal abrasion, resulting in persistent redness. But in more severe cases, these injuries can cause sudden vision loss or even permanent damage to the eye.

Seasonal Allergies and Conjunctivitis

Dussehra also coincides with a seasonal transition, when pollens and allergens are widespread in the air. This can trigger allergic conjunctivitis, leading to redness, watering, and itching in the eyes.

When to See a Doctor

Not all eye redness is harmless. If you experience redness, pain, or excessive itching lasting for more than 2–3 days, it’s important to seek medical advice. Ignoring these symptoms may delay treatment of potentially serious eye conditions, which could result in long-term vision loss.
