Ganesh Visarjan 2025: With Ganesh Chaturthi approaching, the emphasis on green celebrations is gaining momentum. Although Plaster of Paris idols have been found to cause immense water pollution, clay and plantable Ganpati idols are increasingly being favoured for their environment-friendly footprint. During visarjan, these idols dissolve safely in water and go back into the soil without harming the ecosystem.

Environmentalists point out that the shift is important to maintain aquatic life. With the use of clay and natural colours, families are assured their commitment to Lord Ganesha is compatible with nature.

The Dissolution Process Explained

Green Ganpati idols are made with such a composition that they dissolve back into the environment soon. Composed of Shadu Mati (natural clay) or red soil, they are non-toxic and biodegradable. They dissolve in hours or a few days, whereas PoP idols take months.

These idols make use of vegetable-based or water-soluble paints and never leave behind any toxic residue in water bodies. They become a part of the soil once they dissolve.

From Idols to Soil and Plants

For seed-embedded idols, visarjan becomes rebirth in a different sense. Submerged, the clay dissolves into the ground, and the seeds grow into plants. Such idols can be left by families in home gardens or society tanks, where the leftovers can feed plants rather than contaminate rivers and seas.

Even ordinary clay idols, when dissolved, can be composted or sent back to the earth. Not only does it nourish plant life, but it also enhances the natural cycle by transforming worship into sustainability.

Environmental Benefits of Eco-Friendly Visarjan

The green visarjan avoids pollution of water bodies. Without chemical-based materials or synthetic paints, aquatic life is not endangered, and the ecosystem remains undisturbed. Civic bodies in cities such as Mumbai and Pune have also urged people to make use of clay idols and plantable ones for the same reason.

The lack of non-biodegradable waste also lowers the load on municipal cleanups. With the avoidance of PoP idols, devotees help save natural resources.

Moving Towards a Greener Ganesh Chaturthi

The move towards green idols is an increasing awareness among people. Devotees are still able to carry out visarjan ceremonies in complete devotion without damaging nature.

Ganesh Chaturthi is a celebration of joy and unity, and green visarjan keeps it that way without spoiling the air in its aftermath. With clay and plantable idols gaining popularity, the festival creates a positive message, having a compatible face with sustainability.
