Because of the fast-paced lifestyle and changing food habits in this era, every third person faces blood pressure issues. To monitor BP, some rely on traditional mercury (manual) machines, while others use digital devices. While regular monitoring is crucial for those with blood pressure concerns, the question often arises: which method is more reliable?

With advances in technology, the way blood pressure is measured has evolved. Dr Hamid Ashraf, physician at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, says that although mercury machines were more common earlier, digital BP machines are now widely preferred.

Both Are Reliable

Dr Ashraf explains that both mercury and digital machines are effective, and accurate readings are almost the same. “With time, digital machines have become more convenient, but both types can provide reliable results if used correctly,” he said.

How To Measure BP

To get an accurate reading, several steps should be followed. A person should sit comfortably for at least 10 minutes before measuring BP, especially if they have just walked or exercised. The arm should be supported, and the measurement should be taken three times at ten-minute intervals. The average of these readings is considered the actual blood pressure. Either arm can be used for the measurement.

Cuff Size Matters

Dr Ashraf emphasised the importance of using the correct cuff size. Thin and overweight individuals require different cuffs, as using the wrong size can lead to inaccurate readings. It is also essential that the person remains silent and does not talk during the measurement.

Choose Validated Digital Machines

When buying a digital BP machine, Doctor advised checking whether it is validated by the American Heart Association. Only validated devices are considered accurate. While minor differences of 2–5 points between readings are normal, a difference of 10–20 points may indicate a problem with the machine.
